Cole is one of the many people participating in the Rockland Walk to End Alzheimer's on Sunday at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the walk.
Cole began noticing her grandmother's decline following the death of her grandfather. Cole lived around the corner from her grandmother growing up, bonding over coffee.
“Her mind slowly began to show signs of Alzheimer’s disease,” Ashley said. “She began to forget things I told her one day, and when I asked her about it the next day, she wouldn’t remember anything I said."
One time, while watching her grandmother, Cole had to barricade her in the kitchen to keep her from leaving the house. Her grandmother was eventually moved to a nursing home.
“Going to visit her when she was sick was tough because she didn’t remember me at all,” Cole said.
Her grandmother eventually died in 2011 at the age of 86 and Cole said she is honored to walk for her.
